Job Goal: The goal of this position is to create a flexible program and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with pupils; to motivate pupils to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good educational background in accordance with each pupil's ability; to establish good relationships with parents and other staff members.

  1. Demonstrate aptitude or competence for assignment. 
  2. Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with colleagues / students/parents/community, including parent teacher conferences.
  3. Understands and demonstrates classroom management / instructional strategies to support student achievement.
  4. Integrates technology skills to support the content area(s) and 21st century learning.
  5. Knowledge of child and adolescent development.
  6. Knowledge of subject areas, curriculum, and standards-based education.
  7. Knowledge of general organization and functions of a public school system.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

 

  1. To provide Special Education services, direct or consultation to children with Individual Education Plans, including Goals and Objectives.
  2. Provide screenings for children to determine the need for further diagnostic assessments.
  3. To develop an appropriate Individual Education Plan for any child determined to be eligible for services.
  4. To arrange for a full staffing on an annual basis to update IEP goals and objectives.
  5. To provide consultation and assistance to administrators, parents, teachers, and other staff with regard to the transition of young adults and their families.
  6. To obtain written parental permission for evaluation and follow procedural safeguards and IEP procedures as established in IDEA 2004 and the Colorado Department of Education rules (ECEA).
  7. To coordinate initial, annual, triennial, transition and transfer staffing as needed for special education services.
  8. Adhere to IEP to procedural requirements including due process timelines
  9. Member of MTSS Team
  10. Collaborate with BOCES provider regarding goals, scheduling, behavior etc.
  11. Plan appropriate instructional learning strategies, activities, materials that meet the learning needs of the students
  12. Work with classroom teachers to implement, plan, schedule activities and modified classroom work
  13. Conduct assessment & monitor goals of students with IEPs
  14. Plan & supervise para professional working with students
  15. Prepare materials to support accommodations (visual schedule, behavior plans, interventions etc.)
  16. Plan differentiated lessons/instructional activities to meet the learning needs and IEP goals
  17. Collaborate with parents
  18. Provide training and work daily with paras to ensure IEP and best practices are implanted.
  19. To provide data collection for the Colorado Department of Education October 1 count.
  20. To be responsible for file management of students on IEP’s.
  21. Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications / Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Bonding, and or Testing Required:

 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  2. A valid Colorado Teaching Certificate as Specialist Severe / Affective Needs is preferred.
  3. At least three (3) years teaching experience or equivalent is preferred.
  4. At least one (1) year of successful experience working with at-risk youth and their families is preferred.
  5. Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Education may find appropriate.

 

Physical Demands: Between sitting, standing, and walking throughout the day lifting up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and 10 pounds on a frequent basis, occasionally stooping, kneeling, crouching, overhead reaching and fine motor activity, frequently sitting, standing, walking, balancing, reaching at desk and floor level, firm and simple grasping. The work requires constant seeing, hearing, and talking.

 

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office, classroom and/or other educational setting.

 

FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Days / Terms of Employment: 180 Days / Nine-month position. Salary to be determined by the School Board of Education.
